The Lion Hotel Shrewsbury

This 16th-century coaching inn has played host to both Dickens and Darwin. With beautiful, Elizabethan decor, The Lion is set within the heart of historic Shrewsbury. The Lion is a Grade I-listed building, and guests can relax by the Tudor fireplace. The Pickwick Papers were written by Charles Dickens at the hotel itself, and it has also been visited by the 19th-century Prime Minister Benjamin Disraeli, as well as the legendary violinist, Paganini. Rooms offer unique furnishings with renovated decor and original features. Private bathrooms are included in each room, along with a TV and tea/coffee facilities. The many historic streets and shops of central Shrewsbury can be reached within 5 minutes on foot. Pride Hill and Darwin shopping centres are both less than 10 minutes’ walk away, and Shrewsbury Rail Station is a 15-minute walk from The Lion.

Enjoyable

Pros: Staff were very helpful with luggage etc. Room was spacious and clean. The excellent location. It's dog friendly.

Cons: The fixtures and fittings are looking tired, but that is understandable as we told it recently has new owners who are planning to upgrade.

Thoroughly enjoyed our stay & loved the historic charm!

Pros: The room was very large, plenty of space for our travel crib. The bed very comfortable & overall very clean. The bedroom was lovely & warm. The shower had amazing pressure. We really enjoyed our stay & loved the history & charm of the hotel. The staff were also very kind & a young man on check out even let me see the famous Charles Dickens Suite before we left.

Cons: The overall hotel is run down. The carpets are threadbare. Our curtains in our room had rips & the decor is outdated, however the old charm of the hotel makes up for it & if upkeep & a money was put back into it, it would once again be a fantastic place to stay. Also due to circumstances there was no bar or food available but this didnt affect our stay.

Comfortable stay in a Great Location.

Pros: Staff were very helpful, we were able to store our luggage there prior to checking in and after checking out as we travelled by train and had time to kill bimbling around the town. The room was clean, nice size and the shower was great.

Cons: No on-site restaurant. Plenty of great eateries in the immediate area but due to being lazy we like to eat where we stay.. To be fair, they didn't advertise that there was food available so lack of research on our side of things.

A winters retun to the Lion Hotel

Pros: The Lion is situated in a central location and has the benefit of parking directly next to the hotel. The Dickens suit looks over Wyle Cop and is a spacious comfortable room with a bath. This was a rerun visit to the Lion.

Cons: Nothing identified.

Cons: Needs a bit more maintenance and updated decor

Very traditional hotel, ideal for a weekend break in the town centre.

Pros: Easy check in. Excellent location in the town centre. Very grand traditional decor.

Cons: Some decor and fittings are looking a bit tired. I could hear other guests talking in adjacent rooms (I will take earplugs if staying again). The bar wasn't in use! No breakfast was being offered on the occasion of my stay, although I knew this when booking.

Brilliant. Lovely hotel and we will be back

Pros: Dont be put off by the low reviews. Yes it’s in need of a refurbishment and currently not offering food etc but the hotel is historic and is beautiful. If you want modern stay in a travel lodge. Our room was clean, decor great and despite freezing temperatures outside, was lovely and warm. Bed was comfortable and staff were polite. Located in the centre of Shrewsbury so lots of amenities at the doorstep. Owners are doing a good job for what they’ve got. Thanks for a great stay, we will be back!

Cons: Nothing I disliked, but would be great if food offered on site as the venue is lovely, but can understand the cost of all that etc
